“Devil on the Line”

                                                                                          Lindsey Vanlandingham

I put a dollar in that juke box

Merle told me mama tried

Then Johnny said he went to Jackson

And I thought, if they’re livin why can’t I

*

I’ll be a wandering woman

Say goodbye and wish me well

It’s a long road to heaven

But it’s a phone call to hell

*

Well my momma’s got my back

I got Jesus on my side

The straight and narrow is in front of me

But I got the devil on the line

*

I gave a dollar to a stranger

I said next time I’ll have more

She said honey I won’t be here

I’ll be knockin, knockin on the devil’s door

*

I’ve been a wandering woman

Say goodbye and wish me well

It’s a long road to heaven

But it’s a phone call to hell

*

Well my momma’s got my back

I got Jesus on my side

The straight and narrow is in front of me

But I got the devil on the line

*

See life is kind of funny

It looks better in the dark

Then one day you’re standing in the sunshine

And you can’t remember who you are

*

Well my momma’s got my back

I got Jesus on my side

The straight and narrow is in front of me

But I got the devil on the line
